Water Damage to Wooden Tables
One of the biggest complaints within the furniture industry is
because of damage to different surfaces, one of which being wood. This damage
can be caused through poor construction or because the surface hasn’t been
looked after correctly, with the latter being the most likely. You might think
that you have to become an expert to be able to preserve these products, in
fact all you need is a basic understanding of wooden objects, a bit of common
sense and a knowledge of how furniture is meant to be preserved. However, this
can be easily avoided through some simple steps depending on the type of damage
that has occurred to the wood.
The most common problem with wooden surfaces and in particular
wooden tables, whether that be dining, console or coffee tables, is water
damage. This damage is noticeable as unlike nicks and scratches it will leave
rings on the tables/surfaces as the moisture seeps into the finish. Within
seconds of seeing the rings or watermarks on the table you need to try and
repair the damage as quickly as possible. Otherwise permanent damage will
become a risk as the longer the stain is left on the surface then the harder it
becomes to clean. The best way to get rid of the stain is through the use of an
iron however the first step isn’t to grab the kitchen appliance as you need to
place a thick towel on top of the table and onto the stain as quickly as
possible. Then you will need to grab your iron and switch it on to a dry, low
to medium setting and then press it over the towel for several seconds gently
running it across the cloth in the direction of the grain. Whilst the iron is
on the towel the gentle heat should warm the finish enough to release the
moisture back up into the towel and out of the table as a result. When doing
this every couple of seconds you should stop and check the results, this needs
to be repeated until the stain has completely disappeared. Whilst carrying out
the process you need to make sure that you do not overdo the pressing of the
iron as this could cause the soleplate to the touch the wood which could result
in permanent damage to the table through burning and if this happens there
isn’t any methods to get it out! Once you have finished this and the stain has
disappeared it is best to polish and buff the table as you would if you were
going clean the table to make it look more presentable.
By following these few simple steps your wooden tables and
surfaces should never suffer from water damage again!
